The first residential training session was held at IZS Teramo from January 26 to 30, 2026. Over the five-day course, participants had the opportunity to review BSL-3 biosafety procedures, focusing on critical control points, safe workflows, and contamination prevention. The training featured hands-on molecular diagnostics, covering nucleic acid extraction, RT-PCR setup, workflow management, and efficiency testing under simulated conditions. Trainees learned to analyze data, interpret Ct values, identify controls, recognize contamination, and troubleshoot atypical results.

Regarding RVF serology, the course provided foundational principles of ELISA testing, sample requirements, and interpretation of results. Additionally, as requested, participants received an introduction to genomic sequencing techniques used for typing RVFV strains and gained knowledge on conducting epidemiological studies during outbreak investigations. To assess their understanding, group exercises simulated diagnostic decision-making during outbreaks, integrating laboratory results, biosafety protocols, and reporting procedures.
